How is the value of gold calculated?
The international gold price is expressed in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1 grams). To get the price per gram in euros, divide by 31.1 and convert the currency. Once you have the price per gram of pure gold (24K), the value of your piece depends on its purity:
Gold purity table
| Karats | Purity | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | Investment bars, coins |
| 22K | 91.6% | Coins, high-end jewellery |
| 18K | 75.0% | Standard jewellery in Europe |
| 14K | 58.5% | Jewellery in the US and Eastern Europe |
| 9K | 37.5% | Budget jewellery, UK |
Why does the jeweller offer less than the market value?
Gold buyers apply a discount on the market price to cover their operating costs and make a profit. They typically pay between 70% and 90% of the market value. It is also worth noting that the actual weight of a piece of jewellery includes other alloy metals, settings and stones that have no value as gold.
