What is Body Mass Index?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify underweight, overweight, and obesity in adults.
How to interpret your BMI result
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these are the official ranges for adults:
| Classification | BMI Range |
|---|---|
| Underweight | < 18.5 |
| Normal weight (Healthy) | 18.5 โ 24.9 |
| Overweight | 25.0 โ 29.9 |
| Obesity | > 30.0 |
BMI Formula
To calculate it manually, the following formula is used:
Frequently Asked Questions about BMI
Is BMI the same for men and women?
Yes, the formula and WHO ranges are the same for both sexes. However, it does not take into account that women usually have a higher percentage of body fat and men have more muscle mass.
Why is BMI not accurate for athletes?
BMI only measures weight and height; it doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle. Since muscle weighs more than fat, an athlete with high muscle mass might get an "overweight" result without having actual excess fat.
What other indicators exist besides BMI?
For a more complete analysis, professionals usually also measure waist circumference, body fat percentage (bioimpedance), and the waist-to-hip ratio.
